"Who doesn't mind a reaper"
Shirley Bassey

"Reaper" is the seventh track from Sia's seventh studio album, This Is Acting. Released on 7 January 2016, the song serves as the album's final promotional single. "Reaper" was originally meant for Rihanna, along with another song, "Cheap Thrills".

Background[]

"Reaper" was originally meant for Rihanna. Sia co-wrote and co-produced the song with Kanye West, who also needed her to write a track for him. During writing sessions, neither West nor Rihanna would show up; they would leave notes for Sia on how they wanted their tracks to be. Sia told Rolling Stone that even though "it was a fun song," she never thought "it would see the light of day." Her manager pushed her to put the song on This Is Acting, as she "didn't care about the song" and would not have otherwise:

I don't care about the song. I know in print that will look bad, but what I mean is I'm not emotionally attached to it. I thought it was a fun song. I think it's a good, fun song, but I didn't anticipate it being on the record. But my manager really likes it so I put it on for him.
— Sia[1]

Reception[]

Alex Kritselis of Bustle wrote, "After hearing "Reaper" — a mid-tempo, sunshine-y anthem about... cheating death? — it's easy to understand Sia's indifference. It's a catchy tune, sure — but it doesn't make much of an impact. I'm not at all surprised Rihanna passed on it. (It's not a bad song, by any means, but it's just kinda... there.)"[2]

Lyrics

Broke down thought that I would drown
Hope that I’d be found before I hit the ground
Saw you at the corner of my eye, hey
Saw you weeping, saw you creeping, saw you sneaking
In the shadows long, the fear so strong
Saw you out the corner of my eye

Don’t come for me today (reaper)
I’m feeling good, let me savor it
Don’t come for me today (reaper)
I’m feeling good, and I remember when

You came to take me away
And so close I was to heaven’s gate
But no baby, no baby, not today
You tried to track me down
You followed me like the darkest cloud
But no baby, no baby, not today
Oh reaper
No baby, no baby, not today
Oh reaper
No baby, no baby, not today

So come back when I’m good and old
I got drinks to drink and men to hold
I got good things to do with my life
I wanna dance in the open breeze
Feel the wind in my hair
Hear the ocean sing
I got good things to feel in my life

Don’t come for me today (reaper)
I’m feeling good, let me savor it
Don’t come for me today (reaper)
I’m feeling good, I remember when

You came to take me away
And so close I was to heaven’s gate
But no baby, no baby, not today
You tried to track me down
You followed me like the darkest cloud
But no baby, no baby, not today
Oh reaper
Oh no baby, no baby, not today
Oh reaper
Oh no baby, no baby, not today
